Agriculture Committees to Discuss Avian Influenza Preparedness

The Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee will hold a joint informational meeting on Wednesday to discuss the state’s preparedness against the highly pathogenic avian influenza, according to the committee Chairmen Senator Elder Vogel (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) and Representative Martin Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter). The meeting, which is in conjunction with the annual Ag Progress Days, will be held at 10 a.m. at the Russell E. Larson Ag Research Center, 2710 West Pine Grove Road, Pennsylvania Furnace. Scheduled speakers include:

  • Russell Redding, state Agriculture Secretary;
  • Craig Shultz, state veterinarian and director of the Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services in the state Department of Agriculture;
  • Chris Herr, vice president of PennAg Industries;
  • Brian Snyder, executive director of the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture;
  • Richard Roush, dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State University;
  • Sherrill Davison, associate professor and director of the laboratory of avian medicine and pathology at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center; and
  • Ross Pifer, clinical professor of law and director of the Center for Agricultural and Shale Law at Penn State University’s Dickinson School of Law.
