Senator Elder Vogel issued the following statement in response to today’s announcement of a 10-year contract between UPMC and Highmark that ensures patients will continue to have access to the physicians and services they need.
“I am extremely pleased that the state was able to broker a new 10-year agreement between the two companies to provide continued care for many people in Western Pennsylvania. The heated dispute between UPMC and Highmark created much anxiety and threatened the well-being of many people across our region. This new agreement alleviates these problems for the foreseeable future. Unlike previous agreements that had a short-term life span or only involved certain patients or certain healthcare facilities, this deal will be for all patients at all facilities for the next 10 years. We are grateful for this extension and what it means for the citizens of Western Pennsylvania.”
